Issues like the pay gap, underrepresentation in leadership, and limited career opportunities for women stem from deeper social and institutional inequalities.
In Cyprus, gender disparities are especially evident in positions of power. Women hold just 14% of parliamentary seats, 9% of top corporate roles, and 15% of local government positions. Meanwhile, they carry the bulk of unpaid care work, limiting their career prospects and financial independence.
The workplace also remains unsafe for many women — nearly 40% have faced sexual harassment, a rate far above the EU average. Clearly, equality isn’t just about having laws in place — it requires a cultural shift.
To achieve real change, we need policies that promote work-life balance, transparency in pay and promotions, and support for women in leadership. Education plays a key role, especially in encouraging girls to pursue STEM fields, which are vital for the jobs of the future.
Equality isn’t just a goal — it’s a necessity for a fair and sustainable future.
