Addressing the scars of Abuse – Happy International Women’s Day

On this International Women’s Day, as we celebrate the achievements, strength, and resilience of women around the world, we must also take a solemn pause to acknowledge the hidden battles many still face—the lingering scars of abuse.

Abuse, whether physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological, leaves wounds that go far beyond the surface. For millions of women, these scars are not just memories—they are daily realities, often carried in silence. According to global statistics, one in three women experiences some form of violence in her lifetime. This is not just a number—it’s a neighbor, a sister, a co-worker, a friend.

Yet, society often looks away. Shame, stigma, and fear of disbelief keep survivors quiet. Many suffer in the shadows, forced to choose between silence and survival. On a day meant to uplift women, we must also amplify the voices that have long been silenced.

Addressing the scars of abuse begins with belief and support. It means creating safe spaces for women to speak without judgment. It means ensuring justice systems are not just accessible but compassionate. It means offering mental health services that recognize trauma’s long reach and encouraging education that reshapes cultural attitudes around gender and power.

But perhaps most importantly, it means listening.

Every woman who has survived abuse carries a story of courage. Today, we honor their strength. We recognize their pain. And we commit—not just for a day, but every day—to breaking the cycle of violence.

Let Women’s Day be not only a celebration of progress but a reminder of the work still ahead. Until every woman feels safe, supported, and heard, our fight is not over.
