Hybrid and electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in Cyprus

Electric and hybrid vehicles continued to gain traction in Cyprus during the first half of 2025, even as the overall vehicle market experienced a slight decline.

A report released on Tuesday by the statistical service revealed that electric cars made up 4.8% of newly registered passenger saloon vehicles during this period, up from 3.3% in the first half of 2024.

Hybrid vehicles also saw notable growth, increasing their share to 43% from 37.2% over the same timeframe. Meanwhile, petrol-powered saloon cars declined to 43.6% of the market, down from 49.5% the previous year. Diesel-powered vehicles followed a similar trend, dropping to 8.6% from 10.0%.

In absolute terms, the number of registered passenger saloon cars fell by 3.0%, from 20,623 in the first half of 2024 to 20,004 in 2025. Of these, 8,221 (41.1%) were new vehicles, while 11,783 (58.9%) were used.

Rental saloon cars stood out with a 22.8% rise, reaching 2,820 units.

Across all vehicle types, registrations dropped by 1.1% year-on-year, totaling 25,954 in the first six months of 2025 compared to 26,250 in the same period of 2024.

However, June 2025 showed signs of recovery, with overall registrations rising by 13.1% to 4,942 vehicles, up from 4,369 in June 2024. Passenger saloon car registrations in June alone increased by 9.7%, reaching 3,780 compared to 3,447 the previous year.

Commercial vehicle registrations also edged upward by 2.7%, totaling 3,055, compared to 2,975 in the first half of 2024. Light goods vehicles rose by 4.5% to 2,476, and heavy goods vehicles saw a 1.5% increase to 346. In contrast, rental commercial vehicles declined by 20.7% to 119 units, and road tractors dropped slightly by 0.9% to 114.

Motorcycles over 50cc experienced a sharp 31.3% rise, with registrations reaching 2,364, up from 1,800 in the same period last year. On the other hand, mopeds under 50cc saw a steep decline, falling to 112 units from 399.

Registrations of moto coaches and buses also decreased , with only 78 recorded between January and June 2025, down from 87 the previous year.

The statistical service noted that the data are compiled monthly from the road transport department and include details such as vehicle type, energy source, engine size, country of origin, and whether the vehicle is new or used.
