Syros has been named the number one undiscovered island destination in Greece for 2025, according to a new list published by the Dutch travel website Griekenland.net. This is the most popular travel site in the Netherlands dedicated exclusively to Greece and attracts millions of readers every year.
In its ranking of the seven best “hidden gems” among Greek islands, Syros claims the top spot, standing out for its rich culture, neoclassical beauty, and serene, authentic energy.
The article’s author refers to Syros as a place of “Neoclassical Elegance,” describing it as a destination that uniquely blends Greek tradition with European grandeur. Special mention is made of Ermoupoli, the capital of both Syros and the Cyclades, where history comes to life through grand neoclassical mansions, marble squares, and the iconic Town Hall designed by Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller.
Also highlighted is the Apollo Theater, a cultural jewel that regularly hosts performances and festivals, as well as the medieval hilltop neighborhood of Ano Syros, known for its narrow alleyways and stunning sea views.
This recognition is the result of coordinated efforts by the Municipality of Syros–Ermoupolis to promote the island as an alternative, high-quality destination with a focus on culture, history, and authenticity.
In a statement, Deputy Mayor of Tourism Ioannis A. Voutsinos noted:
“Syros offers a unique combination of features that can appeal to a wide range of visitors from Greece and abroad. Its distinctive architecture, local culture, and heritage blend harmoniously with its natural beauty, refined local flavors, and alternative activities — creating unforgettable experiences.” The Griekenland.net list also includes other islands from the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Ionian regions, but Syros’s top ranking stands out as a significant distinction and an opportunity for sustainable tourism growth while preserving the island’s identity and quality.
